Texting has become a natural way to reach each other. Short Message Service (SMS) was first used by an engineer who used the network to send a message from his computer to his friend’s phone. SMS was first a tool for only businesses to use. It was expensive, and it only allowed 160 characters to be sent at a time. The use of text messaging started slow, but is now an important form of communication. Text messaging went from being used for business needs, to something people all around the world use on a daily basis. Text messaging has even developed its own language, “SMS Language”. While text messaging is not the only place SMS language can be found, the size of phone keypads caused the need for such a language. SMS language refers to abbreviations and slangs used in text messaging. Examples of this would be “lol,” “txt,” “u,” and so on. While this new language does seem to raise a problem due to the fact that people may start using it in formal writing, it does make text messaging much faster and easier. Text messaging can be very helpful in different situations, but it also presents many problems. One problem that has become an increasingly important problem is texting while driving. Texting distracts us from the situations at hand, and this can often be dangerous. Even though it may be a very important text that must be sent, it is important to look at where we are when texting, and be aware of the world around us.
